You have made a courageous step to reach out for help and your first counseling appointment has been scheduled. Now you may be wondering what to expect.
The First Session
Exploring your current situation will be the primary focus of the first one or two sessions. You can expect to discuss what is bringing you to counseling or causing the most distress in your life and identifying your strengths and sources of support. We’ll also begin setting initial goals.
For those suffering with a postpartum mood disorder, the first few sessions will focus on addressing your symptoms and how they are impacting your daily life as you adjust to being a new mother. From there we will move forward with making a plan to help you feel better, which includes goal setting, identifying additional support, and envisioning your wellness.
The goal setting process includes identifying clear and specific strategies to improve your day-to-day functioning and health and wellness. Specific areas of focus may involve sleep issues, bonding with your new baby, implementing coping skills and/or relaxation techniques, identifying social supports, or obtaining medication.
You may already have an idea of what changes you’d like to make. Or you may already know what areas in your life you want to address. Or you may not, and that’s okay. We’ll work together to find ways to help you begin to move forward and feel better.
